Brooms & Mops
The Most Basic Yet Integral Cleaning Supplies

As basic as it may sound to many, but brooms, mops, mop handles, mop buckets and mop heads have remained an integral element in the daily cleaning activities, either it is a household or a business operation. Food service businesses, especially, have a higher usage volume of these essential cleaning supplies. Using the right cleaning supply that fits your business model and requirements is inevitable. For instance, mop heads and mop handles come in all different shapes and materials. Similarly, garbage bags have a whole wide range of sizes and colors, depending on which size and industrial load volume if preferable for you.

Talking about different types of brooms and their origins, The bristles of the traditional corn broom are enough for a cave floor but inadequate for the needs of the modern flooring industry. To effectively clean certain floors, brushes that are finer and more closely packed are required. And as you might guess, the numerous broom styles and bristle materials available today are all based on a range of various technologies and are targeted at different types of floor surfaces, such as wood, hard plastics like linoleum, stone, etc. Among these designs are push brooms and angle brooms fashioned from a variety of organic and artificial materials.

Harder to determine is the first appearance of mops, but we can assume that whenever humans came up with a permanent floor, mops were quick to follow. The early history of mankind is one of a nomadic existence, always on the move searching for food and shelter. Tribes who sheltered and remained in one area for a season, like the ancient North American tribes, would line their shelter floors with sand. Once the sand became soiled it was swept out and replaced with clean sand.

The earliest permanent floors (stone floors) appear with the Ancient Egyptians, who were also the first civilization to prepare and build with stone. Once there were permanent floors that couldn’t just absorb messy spills and be easily replaced when they were suitably soiled, a new cleaning solution was necessary. Enter the mop. Cleaning up those sloppy spills evolved from grabbing a bunch of rags and cleaning on your hands and knees to bundling those rags together and attaching them to a handle. Add a bucket of water and cleaning large surfaces became a much easier chore.

Today there exists a mop for every conceivable cleaning need: Dry mops, wet mops, moist mops, premoistening mops, dust mops, hot mops, microfiber mops, sponge mops and cloth mops. Add in the number of different styles and materials used for each one of these, and you get literally hundreds of choices.
