Cleaning up those sloppy spills evolved from grabbing a bunch of rags and cleaning on your hands and knees to bundling those rags together and attaching them to a handle. Add a bucket of water and cleaning large surfaces became a much easier chore.

Add in the number of different styles and materials used for each one of these, and you get literally hundreds of choices.
